Editor’s Note: In my previous post, we explored the Epigenetic benefits of gratitude. This week, we’re diving into the transformative power of forgiveness—for stepping into your best self. These concepts, inspired by my book Create The Vitality You Crave: Epigenetics 101 to Unlock Your Healing Power, offer a pathway to align your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical dimensions. Together, they unlock a deeper sense of joy, healing, and vitality.

“Happiness is the new rich. Inner peace is the new success. Health is the new wealth. Kindness is the new cool.” ~Anonymous

As we embrace the season of giving, let us recognize that the most precious gift we can bestow—both to others and to ourselves—is the gift of forgiveness. True vitality begins with the intentional alignment of your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical selves. It is the art of becoming whole, of reclaiming your energy by living mindfully and letting go of emotional burdens that no longer serve you. By embracing the transformative power of forgiveness, you unlock the power to live fully, heal deeply, and create the joy that sustains your journey.Forgiveness is more than letting go of hurt—it’s a declaration of freedom and a powerful step toward true health and happiness. Let’s explore how releasing resentment and living with intention can help you step into your best self and embrace a life of vitality.

But, how can forgiveness enhance our vitality you might ask?

The Impact of Negative Emotions

In scientific studies, emotions like anger, fear, grief, guilt, and shame are shown to resonate at lower frequencies (between 20 MHz to 175 MHz), with disease starting around 58 MHz and cancer occurring as low as 42 MHz. When we harbor feelings of anger and resentment, we are essentially lowering our vibrational frequency, which has a direct impact on our health. Over time, this can manifest physically, potentially leading to chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular problems, depression, and even cancer.

Be Forgiving: A Path to True Healing

Forgiveness is often framed as a noble act or a gift to the person who wronged us, but its true power lies in its ability to transform the one who forgives. It’s not just a moral or spiritual choice—it’s a profound pathway to emotional, mental, spiritual and physical healing.

When we cling to emotions like anger, resentment, or guilt, they don’t just weigh on our hearts—they also stress our bodies. Chronic negative emotions trigger stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, leading to inflammation and diminishing the body’s ability to repair and rejuvenate itself.

Science supports the transformative power of forgiveness. Research in epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology reveals that our emotions influence gene expression. The stories we hold onto—whether of pain or healing—directly impact how our DNA behaves. By choosing forgiveness, we may turn off stress-related genes and activate those that promote repair and vitality.

The Science of Forgiveness

Our emotions are not just fleeting experiences; they carry measurable frequencies that profoundly impact our health. Positive emotions—love, joy, peace—vibrate at high frequencies, creating an energetic environment that promotes vitality and healing. These uplifting emotions elevate our energy, supporting mental clarity and physical well-being.

In contrast, emotions like anger, resentment, and bitterness vibrate at much lower frequencies. These negative emotions create a toxic internal state that fosters stress and increases the risk of chronic illness. They sap our energy and weigh heavily on both body and spirit, holding us back from experiencing true health and wholeness.

Dr. Bruce Lipton, a celebrated cellular biologist and pioneer in the field of epigenetics, once remarked during a live presentation, “Cancer is caused by the lack of forgiveness.” Now, let me clarify—neither Dr. Lipton nor I are suggesting that all cancers are directly caused by the absence of forgiveness. However, if our thoughts and emotions can alter the chemistry of our blood—which then affects the behavior of our cells—it’s worth taking an honest look within. Are we carrying unhealed resentment or anger?

The energy we hold inside shapes the health of our bodies. Holding onto negative emotions not only blocks our capacity to heal but also stifles our ability to thrive. By choosing forgiveness, we release these burdens, creating space for our bodies and minds to realign with health and harmony.

Forgiveness isn’t just a spiritual practice—it’s a science-backed key to unlocking your body’s ability to repair, regenerate, and reclaim vitality. Let go, heal deeply, and allow yourself to thrive.

Forgiveness as a Lifelong Practice

Forgiveness is not a single event—it’s a continuous practice. Life will inevitably bring moments of pain, disappointment, and misunderstanding. The true question is: how will we respond? Will we hold onto resentment, letting it weigh us down, or will we choose to release it, creating space for peace and healing?

Every offense presents us with a choice. We can become trapped in a loop of anger and bitterness, reliving the hurt over and over. Or, we can decide to forgive, freeing ourselves from the burden of carrying that pain. Forgiveness is not about condoning the offense or forgetting the harm. Instead, it’s about reclaiming your power and choosing emotional freedom over victimhood.

Actionable Steps:

  • Reflect on Past Hurts: Write about a situation where forgiveness felt impossible. What held you back? How did holding onto resentment impact your emotional state?
  • Release the Burden: Try this journaling prompt: What would it feel like to let this go? What peace could I create by forgiving?
  • Practice Forgiveness Daily: Start with small offenses—being cut off in traffic or a thoughtless comment. Use these moments to train your mind and heart to choose forgiveness.

Forgiveness isn’t just about the other person—it’s about you. It opens the door to inner peace and emotional vitality.

Religion and Science Agree: We Are Commanded to Forgive

Forgiveness is a universal concept across various spiritual teachings. In Islam, forgiveness is viewed as a way to align with Allah. In Judaism, acts of atonement (Teshuva) are seen as a means of healing. Christianity teaches that forgiveness is essential for spiritual and emotional well-being, with Jesus exemplifying this on the cross when He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Forgiveness is central to our spiritual health and vital for inner peace, regardless of the wrongs we may have experienced.

What Forgiveness Is (and Isn’t)

Forgiveness is not about denying that we’ve been hurt. In fact, acknowledging our pain is a necessary step in the process. Forgiveness is about freeing up the energy that’s been consumed by holding grudges and resentments, and redirecting that energy into healing and self-growth. It is a powerful tool for reclaiming our emotional and physical well-being.

Forgiveness does not mean tolerating wrong behavior or ignoring injustice. It does not require us to forget or condone harmful actions. Rather, it is about letting go of the desire for revenge and releasing the toxic grip of anger. As Joanna North puts it, forgiveness is overcoming resentment by offering compassion, benevolence, and love to those who have wronged us. This act of mercy not only benefits the person being forgiven but also frees the one doing the forgiving.

A Framework for Forgiveness:

Desmond and Mpho Tutu, in their book The Book of Forgiving: The Fourfold Path for Healing Ourselves and Our World, offer a practical, four-step framework for forgiveness:

1. Telling the Story: Give voice to your hurt through journaling or speaking with a trusted confidant.

2. Granting Forgiveness: Begin with the decision to forgive, even if emotional healing takes time.

3. Deciding the Future: Forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation—it’s about freeing yourself.

4. Releasing the Burden: Replace bitterness with positive emotions like joy, compassion, and acceptance.

Conclusion: Your Vitality Awaits

True vitality is born from the choices we make with intention—the choice to embrace the present, release what no longer serves us, and nurture the joy that carries us forward. Presence invites us to savor the beauty of the now, while forgiveness frees us from the emotional weight of resentment and regret. Together, they empower us to live with grace, aligning us with our higher selves and opening the door to resilience, compassion, and personal growth.

When we approach life with mindfulness and the courage to forgive, we awaken a deep well of vitality that touches every part of who we are—body, mind, and spirit. This is the power of intentional living: it transforms our energy, heals our wounds, and nourishes us in ways we never thought possible.

Today, grant yourself the gift of healing. Release what’s holding you back, step into the present, and embrace the radiant, authentic version of yourself waiting to shine. Choose presence. Choose forgiveness. Choose vitality.

Next week, stay tuned for part 2 of how to optimize forgiveness to optimize your vitality.
