Editor’s Note: In my previous post, we explored the transformative power of forgiveness and its ability to shift our emotional and physical well-being. Today, as the Christmas season approaches, let’s focus on a vital yet often overlooked element of vitality: joy. Additionally, these concepts, inspired by my book Create The Vitality You Crave: Epigenetics 101 to Unlock Your Healing Power, offer a pathway to align your spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical dimensions.

The holidays are often a time of magic, connection, and cherished traditions, yet they can also bring stress, overwhelm, and the weight of unrealistic expectations. Balancing these contrasts requires intentionality. By choosing to cultivate joy this Christmas, you can nurture your mind, body, and spirit—enhancing your vitality while embracing the true essence of the season.

“Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” – Henri Nouwen

Gratitude opens our eyes to the abundance already present in our lives, while joy is the natural state that follows. It’s more than fleeting happiness—it’s a deliberate choice, a deep sense of contentment and connection. When you intentionally choose joy—whether through meaningful relationships, quiet reflection, or simple pleasures—you build a foundation for resilience, healing, and greater vitality.

This Christmas, give yourself permission to slow down, savor moments of beauty, and reconnect with what truly matters. Together, let’s explore practical ways to cultivate joy this season, helping you approach the holidays with renewed energy, calm, and presence.

Why Joy Matters

Joy is more than just a fleeting or pleasant emotion—it’s a powerful force with measurable benefits for your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. When you intentionally cultivate joy, you’re not only improving your mood but also nurturing your overall vitality. Research consistently shows that positive emotions, like joy, contribute to profound physiological and psychological changes that can transform your health.

  • Reduced stress and inflammation: Chronic stress suppresses the immune system and increases inflammation, while joy counteracts these effects by lowering cortisol levels.
  • Improved heart health: Joyful emotions trigger the release of endorphins, which improve cardiovascular function.
  • Strengthened relationships: Sharing joy deepens bonds, creating greater emotional intimacy and connection.
  • Enhanced mental resilience: Joy helps shift your mindset, making you more adaptable in difficult times.

I have noticed personally, that when I am participating in activities that bring me JOY, I see a noticeable improvement in my HRV – or the improvement in my calm Parasympathetic Nervous System PSNS (I like to call Pretty Safe Nervous System).

So often, we get so involved in the “to-do”s of our lives that we forget to make room for Joy. The holiday season, in particular, is brimming with opportunities to embrace joy—if we’re present enough to notice them. Whether it’s laughter shared over a home-cooked meal, the twinkle of festive lights, or the peace of a quiet snowfall, these small yet meaningful moments hold the power to fuel your vitality and emotional well-being. By seeking out and savoring joy this Christmas, you’re not just creating memories—you’re fostering a healthier, more vibrant version of yourself.

Now, if you notice that your Joy tanks are empty, perhaps you need to write down a list of things that bring you joy. What are some of the things that used to bring joy? Things that you’ve forgotten to actually schedule in your life? I know that I have to make a conscious effort to schedule joy.

Prioritize Connection: The Heart of Christmas Joy

Christmas is a time for more than just festive decorations and gift exchanges; it is an opportunity to deepen connections with those we care about. At the heart of this holiday season is the powerful joy that comes from human relationships. Whether it’s spending quality time with family, friends, or giving back to your community, these meaningful connections are not only the essence of Christmas but also a source of healing and vitality.

Practical Ways to Connect and Share Joy:

  • Be fully present: Put away distractions like phones and emails during family gatherings. Being “in the moment” enhances your connection with others.
  • Create new traditions: Bake cookies, play games, or watch a Christmas movie together. Simple rituals create lasting memories.
  • Serve others: Volunteering or performing small acts of kindness—like shoveling a neighbor’s driveway—can bring unexpected joy. Serving others shifts your focus outward, reminding you of the season’s true spirit.

Reconnect with yourself: Connection isn’t just external; it’s internal, too. Schedule quiet moments for journaling, prayer, or self-reflection to center yourself amid the holiday chaos.

Ultimately, the joy of Christmas comes from being present with others and nurturing the relationships that matter most. By prioritizing connection—whether through new traditions, acts of service, or quiet moments of self-reflection—you can embrace the true spirit of the season. Let go of perfection and focus on the shared experiences that naturally bring joy, creating memories that will last long after the holiday season ends.

Let Go of “Perfect” and Embrace Simplicity

The pursuit of perfection often robs us of joy, especially during Christmas. Whether it’s perfectly curated meals, idealized family photos, or the pressure to find flawless gifts, striving for “perfect” leaves little room for joy.

Practical Tips to Simplify and Find Joy:

  • Simplify your celebrations: Focus on quality over quantity. A cozy evening with close family can be far more fulfilling than a packed calendar of events.
  • Release expectations: Allow yourself and others to be human. Embrace imperfection—it’s often where the most meaningful moments happen.
  • Declutter your to-do list: Ask yourself, “What truly matters?” Prioritize activities that bring joy and connection, and let go of the rest.
  • Implement the “floors and ceilings” tool that I mention in my book, and this blog so you have even a 1 minute version of something that brings joy. Sprinkly those throughout your day and watch your vitality increase!

By simplifying, you free yourself to experience the joy in the present moment rather than chasing an illusion of perfection.

Seeing Christmas Through New Eyes

Children naturally embody joy during Christmas because they see the world with a sense of wonder and awe. Their ability to find delight in the smallest things is a powerful reminder that joy can be rediscovered by embracing the magic of the season. As adults, we often lose sight of that wonder, but it’s never too late to reconnect with it and reignite our own joy and vitality.

One way to tap into this childlike sense of awe is by spending time in nature. Whether it’s a snowy walk or a quiet evening of stargazing, nature has a way of reconnecting us to life’s simple beauties and the joy they bring.

Engaging in creative play is another way to embrace the wonder of Christmas. Whether it’s building a snowman, decorating cookies, or crafting handmade gifts, creativity not only sparks joy but also offers an opportunity for self-expression.

Lastly, don’t forget to notice the small delights around you. Savor the warmth of hot cocoa, the twinkle of holiday lights, or the sound of a favorite Christmas song. These seemingly insignificant moments of beauty remind us of life’s magic and the joy that can be found in the present.

When we approach the season with curiosity and gratitude, joy becomes easier to find, making Christmas a time to rediscover the wonder that often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle.

The Power of Giving: Joy in Generosity

Giving—whether time, energy, or resources—creates a profound sense of joy. Studies show that acts of generosity activate the brain’s reward system, boosting happiness and even reducing stress.

Ideas for Joyful Giving:

  • Give experiences over things: Plan a shared adventure or experience that creates lasting memories.
  • Practice small acts of kindness: Write a heartfelt note, deliver a warm meal, or offer a listening ear to someone in need.

Adopt a gratitude-driven mindset: Shift your focus from what you lack to how you can contribute. In giving, you often receive the deepest joy.

Generosity doesn’t require grand gestures. Even small, thoughtful acts can make someone’s day brighter—and leave you feeling fulfilled.

Finding Joy in Stillness

The holiday season can often be overwhelming, filled with constant activity and expectations. Amid the busyness, it’s easy to forget the importance of rest. Yet, moments of stillness are essential for reconnecting with yourself and nurturing inner joy.

One way to embrace stillness is by scheduling downtime. Whether it’s reading a book, meditating, or simply sitting in silence, these quiet moments help to recharge your mind and spirit. By carving out time for yourself, you allow for reflection and clarity.

Reflection is another key aspect of stillness. Journaling prompts like “What brought me joy this year?” or “What am I most grateful for?” can help center your thoughts on the positive experiences you’ve had. This practice fosters gratitude and helps you focus on what truly matters.

Setting boundaries is also important during this time. Saying no to overcommitment and protecting your peace allows you to prioritize what brings you joy, rather than being swept up in holiday pressures.

By incorporating moments of stillness into your routine, you create an environment where joy can flourish. In these quiet pauses, you’re able to reconnect with the beauty of the season and the simple pleasures that often go unnoticed in the rush of holiday preparations.

Conclusion: Choosing Joy This Christmas

As we step into the heart of the holiday season, remember that joy isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you create. Christmas invites us to connect, reflect, and embrace the simple pleasures that make life meaningful. By prioritizing connection, letting go of perfection, rediscovering wonder, and giving with intention, you can experience the fullness of joy this season.

Joy is more than a feeling—it’s the essence of vitality. When you choose joy, you fuel your mind, body, and spirit, creating a ripple effect that touches those around you. This Christmas, give yourself the gift of presence, simplicity, and wonder.

May this season be filled with moments of laughter, peace, and joy—the kind that stays with you long after the holidays end.
