I have countless clients who are dragging themselves through their day with colas or energy drinks. In fact, they start their day with em’ and then perhaps have a few more, especially when the afternoon energy slump comes crashing in. Can you relate? If you’ve been struggling to quit your cola or energy drink addiction, you’re not alone. The sugary allure and caffeine kick of cola and energy drinks can be tough to resist.   3. Type 2 Diabetes: Regular consumption of sugary drinks is linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  4. Dental Problems: The acidity and sugar in colas can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities.
  5. Caffeine Dependency: Cola’s caffeine can lead to dependency, causing headaches and fatigue when not consumed.

The Energy Drink Dilemma

While often marketed as the ultimate solution for energy boosts, energy drinks pose their own dangers due to their high caffeine content and other stimulants. Here’s a glimpse at the many dangerous effects of these drinks.

The list is long for potential dangers of energy drinks, including

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Diarrhea
  • Hallucinations
  • Mood Swings
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heart rate (see below)
  • Stroke
  • Tooth decay
  • Weight gain

Let me go into more depth on a few of these.

Cardiovascular Effects

  1. Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: Energy drinks can cause a rise in heart rate and blood pressure due to their ergogenic effects.
  2. Serious Cardiac Manifestations: Cases of heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) EKG changes, and even heart attacks have been documented, especially in young, healthy individuals. Sudden cardiac death has also been noted.
  3. Arterial Issues: Overconsumption has been linked to arterial dilatation, aneurysm formation, dissection, and rupture.

Neurological and Psychological Effects

  1. Caffeine Intoxication: Symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, muscle twitching, and restlessness can occur at doses above 200 mg.
  2. Headaches: High caffeine intake is associated with both acute and chronic headaches.
  3. Psychiatric Disorders: Caffeine-induced anxiety, sleep disorders, and related disorders are recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
  4. Violent Behavior: Studies have shown a correlation between caffeine intake and violent behavior or conduct disorders in adolescents.
  5. Seizures and Strokes: Reports suggest a link between energy drink consumption and ischemic stroke and epileptic seizures.
  6. Hallucinations: High levels of cortisol from caffeine intake can lead to hallucinations.
  7. Cellular Damage: Ingredients like taurine and guarana may enhance apoptosis in neuronal cells.

Gastrointestinal Effects

  1. High Sugar Content: Energy drinks contain large amounts of sugar, increasing the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
  2. Gut Health: Energy drinks may cause gastritis, and the high sugar content can negatively affect gut bacteria, leading to metabolic syndrome.
  3. Insulin Sensitivity: Acute caffeine intake decreases insulin sensitivity, raising blood glucose levels.
  4. Liver Damage: Cases of jaundice and elevated liver enzymes have been reported after excessive energy drink consumption.

Renal Effects

  1. Urination: Caffeine enhances diuresis (urination), which can lead to dehydration, particularly during prolonged exercise.
  2. Sodium Imbalance: Caffeine-induced sodium loss can affect cardiovascular performance.
  3. Acute Renal Insult: Reports of renal damage after prolonged energy drink consumption.

Dental Effects

  1. Dental Erosion: High sugar content and low pH of energy drinks can cause dental erosion.
  2. Hypersensitivity: Consumption may lead to dentin hypersensitivity.
