Editor’s Note: Last week, I began a series on cleansing, beginning with the basics of cleansing the body. This week, I will highlight chapter 9 of my book about cleansing our environment.

In the quest for better health, it’s crucial to recognize that the diseases plaguing our society—like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer—are not merely the result of genetic predispositions. As Dr. Bruce Lipton emphasizes, they arise from complex interactions among multiple genes and environmental factors. Unfortunately, I’ve had to learn way more than I ever anticipated about environmental toxins. Yet, now I can share with you actionable steps you can take to cleanse your environment, mitigate negative impacts on your health, and enhance your overall vitality.

The Impact of Air Quality

Indoor Air Pollution

The air we breathe—both indoors and outdoors—greatly influences our health. Common indoor pollutants include dust, dust mites, mold, mycotoxins, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning products. Short-term exposure can lead to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and headaches, while long-term exposure may contribute to serious health issues, including respiratory diseases and even cancer.

It is critical to improve our indoor air quality, as we spend most of our time, indoors! In my book, Create The Vitality You Crave: Epigenetics 101 to Unlock Your Healing Power, I go into details about how our environmental air is wreaking havoc on our vitality. Here’s some general, take home basics, for you to consider.

Improving Indoor Air Quality:

  1. Ventilation: Open windows regularly to allow fresh air circulation.
  2. Air Purifiers: Use HEPA air purifiers to capture airborne allergens and pollutants. I recommend the April Aire 5000 for whole-house filtration and the IQ-Aire for portable use. (see my book for resources & links)
  3. Regular Cleaning: Vacuum and dust frequently to minimize allergens.
  4. Humidity Control: Keep humidity levels between 30-50% to prevent mold growth.
  5. Choose Low-VOC Products: Opt for VOC-free cleaning and decorating products.
  6. Indoor Plants: Incorporate plants known for their air-purifying qualities.

Now, let’s dive a bit deeper into some of the nastiest indoor air toxins- Mold and mycotoxins.

Mold and Mycotoxin Awareness

Mold is a hidden danger that can lurk in any environment, affecting health and well-being. The EPA reports that over 50% of U.S. homes harbor some level of mold. Mycotoxins, produced by certain molds, can severely impact those with genetic predispositions, leading to chronic inflammatory response syndromes.

Exposure to mold can lead to symptoms such as chronic fatigue, cognitive impairment, and respiratory issues. Not only do I have experience with my real-life stories, but also those of many of my clients, that demonstrate the incredible short and long-term serious health impacts mold can have on hormone balance and overall vitality.

If you suspect mold in your environment:

  • Address water damage immediately.
  • Regularly inspect your living space for signs of mold.
  • Seek professional mold remediation if necessary.

Remember, mold is not just a problem in humid environments! Any time there is water damage or leakage, it can be a breeding ground for mold!

Now, here’s another biggies that impacts ALL of us – EMF.

Reducing Electromagnetic Frequency (EMF) Exposure

In our technology-driven world, we are constantly surrounded by electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) from devices like smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, and smart appliances. Long-term exposure to EMFs can lead to a range of health issues, including anxiety, chronic fatigue, and even cancer. The science on this may startle you. I share the “deets” in my book. Yet, here’s a few quick tips

Tips to Reduce EMF Exposure

  1. Use Airplane Mode: Keep your phone in airplane mode when not in use.
  2. Turn Off Wi-Fi: Disable Wi-Fi when it’s not needed.
  3. Keep Distance: Maintain at least an 8-inch distance from your laptop.
  4. Wired Connections: Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi whenever possible.
  5. Grounding Practices: Utilize grounding essential oils like frankincense or lavender.

Now, let’s not forget our Outdoor air quality, too.

Outdoor Air Quality

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a staggering 99% of the global population breathes air that exceeds safe quality limits. Outdoor air pollution is linked to numerous health risks, including premature death and DNA damage.

Protecting Yourself from Outdoor Air Pollution:

  • Be mindful of chemical treatments in your yard. Avoid glyphosate-based herbicides and pesticides.
  • Consider using organic alternatives, like vinegar, for weed control.
  • Get above or away from the outdoor smog etc by heading out, or up, to nature.
  • Wear a small air filter around your neck if possible, during days of intense smog.

Conclusion: A Holistic Approach to Cleansing

Cleansing your environment involves more than just tidying up; it’s about creating a space that promotes health and vitality. By focusing on improving air quality, addressing mold issues, and reducing EMF exposure, you can make significant strides in your health journey.

As you take these steps, remember that every small change can lead to lasting improvements in your well-being. For more resources on air filtration systems and mold remediation, check out the links in the resource section of my book.
