Each year, as the days grow longer and the air fills with the scent of fresh blooms, something shifts—not just in nature, but in us too. Just like we instinctively declutter our closets and open the windows for a good Spring clean, our bodies start craving the same. If you’ve been feeling the urge to refresh your routines, lighten your meals, or just hit reset, you’re not alone. There’s actually a biological and seasonal reason Spring is the perfect time for a cleanse.

Why Spring Syncs with Cleansing

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Spring is associated with the liver and gallbladder—two key organs involved in detoxification. The idea is that just as nature is waking up from Winter, so too is our body, and it’s primed to release what’s been stored. Modern science backs this up more than you might think. Research shows that our bodies undergo seasonal changes in hormone levels, immune activity, and even gene expression. These fluctuations can affect how we metabolize food, store fat, and eliminate toxins.

After a Winter of heavier foods, less movement, and minimal sunlight, it’s common for the liver and digestive system to feel sluggish. Spring offers more daylight, which naturally boosts our circadian rhythm and energy levels—creating the ideal conditions for a reset.

In my book Create The Vitality You Crave: Epigenetics 101 to Unlock Your Healing Power, I write a lot about the importance of daily, gentle cleansing as a non-negotiable part of modern living and biohacking. With the sheer volume of toxins we’re exposed to—from environmental pollutants to endocrine disruptors in food and personal care products—our detox pathways need ongoing support. Daily habits like drinking filtered water, eating whole foods, sweating regularly, and moving your lymph are essential.

That said, adding a deeper, more intentional cleanse once or twice a year—especially in the Spring and Fall—can be incredibly powerful. It’s like giving your body a tune-up. These seasonal resets help clear out what’s accumulated, reboot your systems, and create space for better energy, better sleep, and better hormone balance.

I’ve personally been doing a targeted liver cleanse every 6 months for several years now. I don’t just go off how I feel (though that’s important, too)—I actually track my liver health through bloodwork (monitoring liver enzyme levels) and the DUTCH test, which is amazing for monitoring estrogen metabolism. Estrogen clearance is a direct reflection of liver function, and it gives me insight into how well my body is processing and eliminating excess hormones. Every time I do a Spring cleanse, I notice improvements in energy, sleep quality, and even the texture and tone of my skin. It’s like watching my body step into a whole new level of vitality.

The Foundations Still Matter: Hydration First

Before diving into any cleanse, I always come back to one non-negotiable: hydration. Think of it as the tide that helps wash everything else out. Water supports every major detoxification process in the body—from flushing the kidneys to helping the liver metabolize toxins. And quality matters. Filtered, mineral-rich water helps keep the body’s pH balanced and reduces the toxic load from contaminants like chlorine, lead, and pesticides.

I swapped to a high-quality filter a few years ago—one that also alkalizes the water—and it made a noticeable difference. My skin got softer, my hair was less dry, and I just felt better. Don’t forget to change your filters regularly, though—an overused one can become a source of toxins itself.

Spotlight on Cleansing Organs

If you’ve read my previous post, you’ll remember I emphasized supporting the channels of elimination before starting any deeper detox. That advice holds especially true in Spring, when you can align with your body’s natural rhythm and maximize results.

Let’s quickly recap the main players:

• Kidneys – Flush with plenty of filtered water, limit sodium, and enjoy potassium-rich foods like leafy greens and watermelon.

Liver – Eat bitter greens, cruciferous veggies, and use herbs like milk thistle or dandelion. These foods are proven to support detoxification enzyme activity.

Lungs – Add 5–10 minutes of deep breathing to your morning routine—bonus if you can do it outside. It’s amazing what fresh Spring air can do.

• Skin– Get your sweat on. Whether it’s sauna time or brisk walks, sweating is a key route for eliminating waste. Stay hydrated and add electrolytes if needed.

Spring-Specific Cleansing Practices

If you want to take your Spring cleanse a little deeper this year, here are a few practices I keep in rotation:

1. Bitter is Better

Spring is the season of bitters. Bitter greens like arugula, endive, and dandelion not only support digestion but also stimulate bile flow—key for breaking down fats and flushing toxins. Bile also plays a big role in hormone metabolism (Wang et al., 2021). Bitter foods are basically your liver’s love language. A couple of new products that I love are De-Liver-Ance and Liver Flow

2. Support the Lymphatic System

Gentle rebounding, dry brushing, or lymphatic massage can help clear stagnation and puffiness. Even 2 minutes of dry brushing before my morning shower gives me a noticeable energy lift.

3. Seasonal Eating

Spring produce, like asparagus, radishes, and citrus, are naturally detoxifying. Eating with the seasons isn’t just trendy—it’s backed by research showing it enhances nutrient density and supports digestion.

4. Track Your Progress

I always recommend journaling how you feel during a cleanse—but if you want to go a step further, lab tests like the DUTCH or comprehensive metabolic panels can give you data to back up what your body is already telling you.

Final Thoughts: A Gentle Reset, Not a Punishment

A Spring cleanse doesn’t have to mean deprivation, green juice marathons, or complicated supplements. At its core, it’s about tuning in to your body’s natural rhythm, giving your systems a little support, and creating space—physically and mentally—for the new season.

For me, it’s a ritual. Every Spring, I take stock of how I’m feeling and give my body the reset it’s asking for. And every time, the results are the same: deeper sleep, brighter skin, more energy, improved hormonal function, and that grounded clarity that comes when your internal systems are actually working with the season instead of against it.
